Biodynamic Wine

Biodynamic farming treats the vineyard as a self-sustaining ecosystem. Rooted in the philosophy of Rudolf Steiner, it goes beyond organic certification to incorporate a holistic approach to soil health, biodiversity, and the rhythmic forces of the lunar calendar. Certified biodynamic vineyards use no synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilisers, and instead rely on homeopathic preparations, composting, and cover crops to build living soil. The wines that result from this level of care express their terroir with exceptional clarity.

All About Biodynamic Wine | Frequently Asked Questions

We will process and ship your order in 2-3 business days, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with tracking as soon as the Carrier scans the shipping label.

Ground shipping time depends on location, here's a breakdown:

West Coast: 1-2 business days
Midwest: 3-4 business days
East Coast: 5 business days

Process time is not shipping time. Shipping time starts from the days successive to the day of shipping, after the order has been processed.

See here our shipping policy.

Signature on delivery is mandatory for wine deliveries. Please make sure someone is at the shipping address to sign for the package.

If applicable, please consider delivering the package to a business address to ensure someone is available to sign for the package.

We also have the option of delivering the package to a Carrier's store for pickup. Please reach out to us to coordinate.

Carrier will try to delivery a package up to three times before returning the package to us.

See here our shipping policy.

If you miss a delivery and a package gets returned to us we have two options:

1) Reship the package right away: due to the very high cost of shipping and returns, we must charge a re-shipping fee to be determined based on package size and shipping destination.

2) Consolidate the returned package with your next order: this option is free of charge and it's the most popular option.

See here our shipping policy.

Biodynamic wine is made from grapes farmed according to biodynamic principles, a holistic agricultural philosophy developed in the early 1920s by the Austrian philosopher and scientist Dr. Rudolf Steiner. The approach treats the entire farm as a self-sustaining living system, where soil health, plant life, animals, and the surrounding ecosystem are all interconnected. Biodynamic farmers avoid synthetic pesticides and fertilizers entirely, relying instead on composting, cover crops, and natural preparations made from plants and minerals. Many also follow the biodynamic calendar, which organizes farming tasks around lunar and cosmic cycles with the aim of optimizing vine health and grape quality. The resulting wines tend to be deeply expressive of their terroir, reflecting the specific character of the land in a way that is hard to replicate through conventional methods. At Primal Wine, the biodynamic wine collection includes 54 bottles spanning red, white, orange, and rosé styles from Italy, France, Austria, Spain, and the United States, all from producers who farm with this level of care and intention.

Organic wine and biodynamic wine share a common foundation: both forbid synthetic pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers in the vineyard. The difference is in how far each approach goes. Organic farming focuses on what you cannot use. Biodynamic farming goes further by prescribing what you should actively do to build a thriving, regenerative ecosystem. Biodynamic producers apply specific preparations, such as fermented herbal and mineral compounds, to stimulate soil biology and strengthen the vines from within. They also pay close attention to timing, often planting, pruning, and harvesting according to the biodynamic calendar. Many biodynamic estates are also certified through Demeter International, the main certifying body for biodynamic agriculture, which sets some of the strictest standards in the wine world. All biodynamic wines meet organic standards, but not all organic wines are biodynamic.

Demeter is the primary international certifying organization for biodynamic agriculture, and seeing its name on a wine label is a meaningful indicator of how the grapes were grown. To earn Demeter certification, a producer must meet a set of standards that go well beyond standard organic requirements. The vineyard must be managed as a closed-loop ecosystem, which means integrating animal husbandry, composting on-site, maintaining biodiversity, and using biodynamic preparations to feed the soil. At least ten percent of the farm's total area must be dedicated to biodiversity, such as forests, wetlands, or wildflower meadows. In the winery, additives are strictly limited and many conventional processing techniques are prohibited. Demeter-certified wines represent some of the most rigorously farmed bottles available anywhere in the world. Several producers in the Primal Wine biodynamic collection carry this certification, including Meinklang from Burgenland in Austria and Gut Oggau, also from Austria.

This is one of the most genuinely debated questions in the wine world, and it is worth taking seriously. Many winemakers, sommeliers, and longtime drinkers believe that biodynamic wines have a distinctive quality of aliveness, texture, and site specificity that sets them apart. The reasoning is logical: healthier soil produces vines with deeper root systems, and deeper roots access a broader range of minerals and micronutrients, which can translate into greater complexity in the glass. Biodynamic farming also encourages the kind of biodiversity that keeps a vineyard resilient over decades, which tends to support more consistent quality vintage after vintage. Scientifically, the evidence is still developing, and individual results vary by producer and region. What is harder to argue with is the track record: some of the most celebrated and consistently excellent wine estates in Burgundy, the Rhône Valley, Alsace, and Italy have been farming biodynamically for years, and their wines speak for themselves. The best way to form your own opinion is to open a bottle and pay attention.

Biodynamic wine is often, but not always, vegan and low in sulfites. These qualities are shaped by the cellar practices of each individual producer rather than by biodynamic certification itself. Vegan wine is made without animal-derived fining agents like gelatin, casein, isinglass, or egg whites, which are sometimes used to clarify wine before bottling. Many biodynamic winemakers prefer to leave their wines unfined or use bentonite, a clay-based alternative, making those wines vegan by default. Sulfite use is a separate question. Demeter certification does allow small amounts of added sulfur dioxide, though biodynamic producers tend to use far less than conventional winemakers. Some use none at all. At Primal Wine, individual product pages include details on vegan status and sulfite levels, so you can filter by whichever criteria matter most to you.

Primal Wine ships biodynamic wine to 45 states across the United States, with orders processed within 2 to 3 business days. The biodynamic collection is curated and tasted by the Primal Wine team before any bottle earns a place on the site, which means you are not sorting through a generic catalog. The selection includes bottles from some of the most respected biodynamic producers in Europe and California, with prices starting around $25 and ranging up to prestige-level releases from estates like Gut Oggau, Château de Béru, and Famille Brunier. Orders over $299 qualify for free shipping. For shoppers who want an ongoing supply of biodynamic and natural wine without having to choose each time, the Primal Wine natural wine club sends a hand-selected case monthly, with tasting notes and a recipe card included.
