Producer profile

Yves Duport

Domaine Yves Duport, spanning 12 hectares, is a testament to the dedication of four generations. Today, the Domaine is managed through organic and biodynamic methods. Most of its plots, rich in clay-limestone soil, are strategically oriented south-south-east, overlooking the Rhone's untouched natural banks. Here, the approach is to let nature take the lead in tilling the soil and caring for the grapevines, enabling the vines to absorb what they need from the ground naturally. This cultivation method is critical to fully capturing and expressing the terroir's essence. As a result, the wines from Domaine Yves Duport reflect the distinct character of the terroir.

Wine region

Savoie, France

The Savoie wine region is in eastern France, near the Swiss border and the Alps. It covers approximately 2,000 hectares and is known for its mountainous terrain and diverse soils, including limestone, clay, and glacial deposits. The region's cool climate is ideal for producing fresh, crisp wines.

Savoie predominantly produces white wines, which account for about 70% of its output. The most widely planted white grape variety is Jacquère, known for its light, fresh, and aromatic profile. Other significant white grape varieties include Altesse (also known as Roussette), Roussanne (locally called Bergeron), Chasselas, and the rare Gringet. These wines often exhibit floral and mineral notes, reflecting the alpine terroir.

Red wine production in Savoie is limited but notable. The key red grape varieties are Mondeuse, which produces deeply colored wines with high acidity and tannins, and Gamay, known for its light-bodied and fruity wines. Pinot Noir and Persan are also grown, adding to the region's red wine diversity.

Savoie has several appellations. The primary one is Vin de Savoie AOC, which includes 16 crus that produce white, red, rosé, and sparkling wines. Apremont, Abymes, Chignin, and Arbin are notable crus within this appellation. Roussette de Savoie AOC focuses on wines made exclusively from the Altesse grape, and Seyssel AOC is known for its dry and sparkling white wines.

Due to limited production and export, the region's wines are typically consumed locally. Savoie wines are celebrated for their food-friendly nature, pairing well with local cheeses and dishes. Combining unique grape varieties and alpine terroir makes Savoie an intriguing region for wine enthusiasts.
