Tasting notes

Eight grape varieties — red and white — from certified organic Northern California vineyards go into the pomace, giving this piquette a bright neon pink hue and a sharp, tangy character that lands somewhere between tart grapefruit and strawberry lemonade. At under 1 g/L residual sugar and 20 mg/L total sulfites with none added, it is bone dry and genuinely alive in the glass.

  • Style: Dry, lightly sparkling piquette; neon pink-red; tart and fizzy; very low ABV
  • Grapes & Terroir: Barbera, Carignan, Chardonnay, Malvasia, Marsanne, Roussanne, Zinfandel, Muscat; certified organic Northern California vineyards; roughly equal parts each variety
  • Winemaking: Pomace re-pressed with well water; spontaneous fermentation; stainless steel; unfined; unfiltered; no added sulfites (20 mg/L total); <1 g/L residual sugar
  • Serving: Serve at 38-42F; no decanting; drink young
  • Pairing: Fried chicken, calamari, grilled burgers, potato chips, summer cookout fare
  • Similar To: For fans of pet-nat, kombucha, and anyone who wants a low-ABV natural option that still tastes like something

Piquette is not wine, technically speaking. It is made by adding water to grape pomace — the skins, seeds, and stems left after pressing — and fermenting the residual sugars. The result is a lower-ABV, lightly sparkling, wine-adjacent beverage with a long history as a drink for vineyard workers. Deux Punx sourced pomace from certified organic vineyards in Northern California and used pristine well water for the second press.

The 2021 blend draws from eight grape varieties in roughly equal parts: Barbera, Carignan, Chardonnay, Malvasia, Marsanne, Roussanne, Zinfandel, and Muscat. The combination of red and white pomace gives the wine its neon pink-red color. Fermentation was spontaneous, carried out with no additions, and the wine was aged in stainless steel before bottling unfined and unfiltered. Total sulfites measure just 20 mg/L with none added.

On the palate it is sharp, tart, and lightly fizzy — closer to a kombucha or sour soda in its refreshment factor than to a conventional sparkling wine. Residual sugar is under 1 g/L, so there is no sweetness to soften the acidity. Drink it cold, drink it fast, and do not overthink it.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Deux Punx

Deux Punx was founded by Dan Schaaf and Aaron Olson in April 2008. Both are self-described ex-punks who came to wine through a love of the drink rather than formal training. The operation is based at Punk Dog Wineries, a shared production facility in the River East neighborhood of Napa.

All Deux Punx wines are made with native yeast fermentation, minimal sulfur dioxide, neutral vessels, and no fining or filtering. The house approach is to source from certified organic vineyards and then get out of the way. Grape sources include Elk Prairie Vineyards in Humboldt County, the Tejada family vineyard in Lake County, Scribner Bend in Clarksburg, Suma Kaw in the Sierra Foothills, and Albini Family Vineyards in Carneros.

The Piquette is produced by taking pomace from first pressings of both red and white grapes from two organic vineyards, then doing a second press with well water. This liquid undergoes spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel and is bottled unfined and unfiltered with no added sulfites. The wine is meant to be consumed young — it is not built for aging.

Wine region

California, United States

California produces wine across a vast range of climates and soil types, from the cool Pacific-influenced coast to warm inland valleys. Northern California's key natural wine regions include Napa Valley, the Sierra Foothills, Lake County, Humboldt County, and the Sacramento River Delta near Clarksburg. Deux Punx sources fruit from several of these areas, working specifically with growers who farm organically.

Napa Valley, where Deux Punx operates its winery, sits north of San Francisco and is best known for Cabernet Sauvignon, though it encompasses 16 sub-appellations with varied soils and elevations. Lake County, directly north of Napa, offers volcanic soils at higher elevation, while the Sierra Foothills and Humboldt County bring cooler conditions and distinct mineral character. For the Piquette, the pomace sourced from these certified organic vineyards across Northern California determines the wine's flavor profile as much as any single terroir.
