Tasting notes

This is one of the more unusual red wines in the natural wine world: a full-carbonic Aleatico at 11% ABV that delivers rose water, fresh cherry, and wild strawberry with almost no grip. The volcanic soils of Lago di Bolsena give it a flinty mineral thread that keeps it from reading as simple or sweet.

  • Similar To: For fans of Beaujolais Nouveau, Gamay, or light Frappato who want something aromatic and Italian

S.O.S. Lago Rosso is 100% Aleatico from vines averaging 50 years old, grown on volcanic, iron-rich soils around Lago di Bolsena in the village of Gradoli, northern Lazio. The grapes are hand-harvested, destemmed, and undergo carbonic maceration, then spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts. The wine is aged in neutral oak, bottled unfined and unfiltered with no added sulfites.

The name and the wine are both a direct response to a real fight: local farmers, residents, and municipalities around Lago di Bolsena organized to oppose plans to build an industrial geothermal electricity plant at Castel Giorgio on the lake's edge. Proceeds from S.O.S. Lago Rosso support that campaign. The label is a statement as much as it is a wine.

Aleatico is an aromatic red grape with a naturally high perfume and moderate tannin. Carbonic maceration keeps the profile light and fruit-forward, amplifying the grape's characteristic rose water, red fruit, and floral notes while holding the alcohol to 11%. At this weight, it sits closer to Beaujolais Nouveau in structure than to a conventional Italian red.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Le Coste

Le Coste di Gradoli was founded in 2004 by Gianmarco Antonuzzi and Clémentine Bouveron, who purchased approximately three hectares of abandoned vineyard and olive land in Gradoli, on the northwestern shore of Lago di Bolsena in northern Lazio. Gradoli is Antonuzzi's hometown. Before establishing Le Coste, both spent years working with prominent natural wine producers in France, including Bruno Schueller in Alsace, Didier Barral in Languedoc, Jean-Paul Thévenet in Beaujolais, and Philippe Pacalet in Burgundy. It was in Alsace that Antonuzzi and Bouveron met.

The estate has grown to approximately 14 hectares of vineyards, olive groves, chestnut trees, and oak forest. Vineyards sit at elevations ranging from 400 to 600 meters on volcanic soils high in iron and minerals. Vines are planted at densities up to 10,000 plants per hectare and include both massale selections and ungrafted vines. Farming is biodynamic. Bouveron oversees viticulture while Antonuzzi works as the cellar master. Indigenous varieties form the backbone of the portfolio: Aleatico, Procanico, Roscetto, Malvasia, Ansonica, Canaiolo, Ciliegiolo, and Grechetto Rosso, alongside some French varieties planted more recently.

All winemaking takes place in an ancient cellar in the center of Gradoli village. Fermentations are spontaneous using indigenous yeasts. Wines are aged in neutral oak barrels, large fiberglass tanks, or cement vats depending on the bottling. The cellar uses gravity for all rackings. No fining, no filtration, and no added sulfites across the range.

Wine region

Lazio, Italy

Lazio is a large central Italian region with Rome at its center, bordered by Tuscany and Umbria to the north and the Tyrrhenian Sea to the west. The northern part of the region, known as Alta Tuscia or the Viterbo province, is dominated by volcanic geology: ancient calderas, crater lakes, and soils rich in iron, ash, and minerals. Lago di Bolsena, at 113 square kilometers, is the largest volcanic crater lake in Europe, and its presence moderates the local mesoclimate, moderating heat and extending the growing season for surrounding vineyards.

Lazio has historically been white wine country, built on Malvasia, Trebbiano, and Procanico. The most recognized appellations include Frascati DOC in the Castelli Romani south of Rome, Est! Est!! Est!!! di Montefiascone DOC on the eastern shore of Lago di Bolsena, and Aleatico di Gradoli DOC on the lake's northwestern side. The Aleatico di Gradoli DOC, established in 1972, covers Gradoli, Grotte di Castro, San Lorenzo Nuovo, and parts of Latera, though total plantings of Aleatico within the zone were recorded at only 3 hectares as of 2017. A growing number of natural wine producers in northern Lazio are now working with indigenous red varieties including Aleatico, Cesanese, and Grechetto Rosso.
