Tasting notes

Trebbiano Spoletino from vines this old is exceptionally rare — the variety was nearly abandoned before its Umbrian revival, and Collecapretta is among the few producers working with genuinely ancient stock. The wine delivers a distinctly saline, mineral palate with peach and pineapple fruit that tightens with age rather than softening, which makes the 2017 particularly compelling to open now.

Vigna Vecchia is a direct-press white wine from Collecapretta, a small farm in the Colli Martani hills of southern Umbria, just outside Spoleto, in the hamlet of Terzo la Pieve. The wine is made from old-vine Trebbiano Spoletino — a grape native to this corner of Umbria, known for its late ripening, resistance to botrytis, and naturally high acidity. Vines are trained on trellises following the traditional Umbrian espalier method, grown in clay-rich soils laced with outcroppings of tufo and travertine limestone at around 500 meters elevation in the Martani Mountains.

In the cellar, whole bunches are hand-harvested and gently pressed to extract only the free-run must (mosto fiore). Fermentation is spontaneous, without temperature control, using only indigenous yeasts from the grapes and the cellar. No sulfur is added at any stage. The wine ages in stainless steel, cement, or fiberglass vessels and is bottled unfined and unfiltered, timed to the waning lunar cycle.

Vigna Vecchia reads quiet and restrained in its youth — golden yellow in color, with a muted, neutral character that slowly gives way to intense mineral purity and saline tension. Notes of white peach, pineapple, and lemon run through the palate alongside a firm herbaceous edge and a long, salty finish. Trebbiano Spoletino builds complexity with bottle age; older vintages develop more pronounced stone-fruit concentration and depth.

Collecapretta bottles fewer than 8,000 total bottles across all wines in a good year. Vittorio Mattioli and his daughter Annalisa manage the 8-hectare property, which also raises animals and grows farro and ancient grains — operating as a genuine closed-cycle farm.

The wine's firm acidity and saline finish make it a natural match for scorzone (summer truffle) preparations, a classic local pairing. It holds up well with medium-structured dishes — think pan-seared sea bream, pasta with light seafood sauces, or aged sheep's milk cheeses. Avoid heavy cream sauces or anything that would flatten the wine's mineral drive.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

Producer profile

Collecapretta

The Mattioli family has lived in the hamlet of Terzo la Pieve — historically called Collecapretta, meaning 'hill of the goats' — since the 1100s. The property sits just outside Spoleto in southern Umbria. Since 2005, the family, led by Vittorio Mattioli with his wife Anna and daughter Annalisa, began bottling their wine rather than selling exclusively in bulk. The farm covers 8 hectares in total: approximately 4 hectares of indigenous old vines, 2 hectares of olive trees, and 2 hectares of farro and ancient grains. The estate also raises livestock, and the entire operation functions as a closed-cycle farm.

All farming follows biodynamic principles, guided entirely by lunar cycles. No chemical inputs are used in the vineyard. The only soil amendment is compost produced from the farm's own animals. Vines are trained on trellises in the traditional Umbrian espalier style. The clay-rich hillside soils, at elevations between 400 and 550 meters in the Martani Mountains, contain outcroppings of tufo and travertine limestone. Total annual production across all wines is approximately 8,000 bottles.

Winemaking at Collecapretta follows a consistent, intervention-free approach across all labels. Grapes are hand-harvested and fermented spontaneously without temperature control using only native yeasts from the grapes and cellar environment. No sulfur is added at any point. Wines age in stainless steel, fiberglass, or glass-lined cement vats before bottling, unfined and unfiltered, timed to the waning lunar cycle. For Vigna Vecchia, whole bunches are gently direct-pressed to extract free-run must only.

Wine region

Umbria, Italy

Umbria is a landlocked region in central Italy, bordered by Tuscany to the northwest, Lazio to the south, and the Marche to the east. Its wine country centers on two main zones: the area around Orvieto to the southwest, historically known for white wine production, and the hillier terrain around Spoleto and Montefalco in the center and southeast. Collecapretta sits in the Colli Martani, the rolling limestone and clay hills between Spoleto and the Martani mountain range, at elevations between 400 and 550 meters above sea level. The proximity of the Apennines moderates summer heat and ensures significant diurnal temperature variation, preserving acidity in the grapes through a late harvest season.

The region's most prominent red appellation is Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG, home to one of Italy's most tannic indigenous grapes. For whites, the Spoleto DOC — established in 2011 — is the key appellation for Trebbiano Spoletino, requiring a minimum of 85% of the variety for single-varietal bottlings. Collecapretta's Vigna Vecchia is labeled as Umbria IGT, giving the producer flexibility in winemaking outside DOC regulations. Trebbiano Spoletino is grown almost exclusively in and around Spoleto and Montefalco, with total plantings in Umbria estimated at around 60 hectares — making it one of Italy's rarest indigenous white varieties in commercial production.
