Tasting notes

The 24-hour skin contact and 12-month lees aging in terracotta give this Trebbiano a velvety, almost oily texture that you won't find in any stainless-steel version of the grape. The nose opens with acacia honey, yellow broom flowers, and a faint vegetal lift, then the palate delivers a saline, sapid finish that ends on candied citron and quince.

This is 100% Trebbiano from Francesco Cirelli's certified organic estate near Atri, in the Teramo hills of Abruzzo, eight kilometers from the Adriatic Sea. The vineyards sit on clay and chalk soils in the Colline Teramane hills, where the Adriatic's maritime influence moderates temperatures during the growing season.

Grapes are collected in boxes, destemmed, and gently crushed before transfer into terracotta amphora for a 24-hour skin maceration. The skins are then separated and softly pressed. Fermentation proceeds spontaneously with native yeasts directly in the amphora, followed by full malolactic fermentation and 12 months of aging on the lees in the same vessels. The wine is bottled unfiltered and unfined with minimal sulfites added.

The amphora is central to Cirelli's philosophy: the porous terracotta allows micro-oxygenation without imparting any oak or extraneous flavors, preserving what Cirelli calls the authenticity of the wine. Cirelli began using amphora in 2011, drawing on a fermentation tradition that predates Roman viticulture. The result is a hazy golden wine with a velvety, slightly oily texture and a finish that lingers on candied citron and quince.

Classified under the Trebbiano d'Abruzzo DOC, the estate received organic certification in 2006 and began incorporating biodynamic practices over subsequent years. The Anfora line uses only estate fruit.

The wine's saline, sapid finish makes it a natural match for shellfish — clams in white wine, grilled langoustines, or fritto misto from the Abruzzo coast. The texture and honey notes also work well against aged pecorino or a creamy burrata. Try it alongside arrosticini, the region's skewered lamb, where its acidity cuts through the fat without overwhelming the meat.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Agricola Cirelli

Francesco Cirelli was born in Abruzzo, left at age 16, and later studied business administration before returning in 2003 to purchase land near the ancient town of Atri in Teramo province. He and his partner Michela founded Agricola Cirelli as a 22-hectare farm located eight kilometers from the Adriatic Sea, at the border of the Teramo and Pescara provinces.

The estate received organic certification in 2006 and biodynamic certification in 2021. Cirelli's model is a complete farming organism rather than a winery alone: vineyards share the land with olive groves, wheat fields, fig trees, and free-range livestock including geese, sheep, and black pigs. Geese manage weeds between vine rows; crop rotation and animal manure replace synthetic inputs. Roughly six of the estate's 22 hectares are planted to vine, with the remainder in olives, grains, vegetables, and orchard. The vineyards grow on clay and chalk soils described locally as Terre di Calanque, a weathered clay and sand formation with high calcareous content that supports natural acidity.

Cirelli began fermenting and aging wines in terracotta amphora in 2011, applying the format to his Trebbiano, Montepulciano, and Cerasuolo. The Anfora line uses only estate-grown fruit. His stated philosophy is making terroir-driven wines without adding external flavors from oak: the amphora's micro-oxygenation allows the wine to develop without reduction while leaving no imprint of its own. All fermentations use native yeasts only; no winemaking additives are used in the cellar.

Wine region

Abruzzo, Italy

Abruzzo runs along Italy's central Adriatic coast, spanning the provinces of Teramo, Pescara, Chieti, and L'Aquila. The region stretches from the shoreline to the Apennine peaks, creating three distinct microclimates — sea, hills, and mountains — across a relatively narrow geographic band. Elevations range from sea level to over 700 meters in the Apennine foothills. Coastal vineyards near Pescara and Teramo benefit from maritime breezes that moderate summer temperatures and extend the growing season, while inland sites gain diurnal temperature variation that preserves acidity. Soils shift from clay and limestone in the hillside zones to sandy alluvial deposits closer to the coast.

Trebbiano d'Abruzzo DOC was established in 1972 and is the only appellation in Abruzzo dedicated exclusively to white wine. The production zone covers the non-mountainous portions of all four provinces, spanning more than 150 parishes. The DOC permits at least 85% Trebbiano Abruzzese, Trebbiano Toscano, and/or Bombino Bianco, though the local Trebbiano Abruzzese clone is considered genetically distinct from Trebbiano Toscano and yields wines with greater character and aging potential at low yields. Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC is the region's flagship red, and the Colline Teramane DOCG in the northern Teramo hills represents the highest tier for Montepulciano-based reds. Pecorino and Passerina have gained increasing recognition as white varieties. A new generation of producers, including Cirelli, has positioned Abruzzo as a significant source of organically farmed natural wines.
