Tasting notes

Cirelli's Pecorino hits a rare combination: the textural weight and slight roundness you get from four months on lees, cut through by the grape's naturally high acidity and a distinctly saline, mineral finish. It smells of white peach and acacia blossom and lands dry, savory, and long on the palate — more grip and character than most whites at this price.

Agricola Cirelli's Pecorino Colline Pescaresi is a 100% Pecorino white wine from certified organic vineyards near the hilltop town of Atri in Teramo province, Abruzzo. The vines grow on calcium-clay soils approximately 8 kilometers from the Adriatic Sea, where maritime breezes moderate summer heat and help retain natural acidity in the grapes.

In the cellar, grapes are destemmed and gently pressed, then fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks. The wine rests on fine lees for approximately four months before bottling without fining or filtration. Low sulfites are added at bottling. No oak is used at any stage.

Pecorino is a low-yielding indigenous variety that accumulates both high sugar and high acidity simultaneously, which is unusual among white grapes. The result is a wine that is dry yet textured, with a saline mineral finish and enough structure to handle food. The 2019 vintage carries 13% ABV. This wine is classified under the Colline Pescaresi IGT, a Pescara province appellation established in 1995 that covers the central Adriatic hills of Abruzzo.

Agricola Cirelli holds certified organic status (ICEA IT BIO No. S1780) and received biodynamic certification in 2021. The estate operates as a fully integrated farm: 6 of the 22 hectares are planted to vines, with the remainder under olive groves, wheat, barley, vegetables, and free-range livestock including geese that manage weeds between vine rows.

Works well with Adriatic seafood — grilled branzino, salt-baked sea bream, or spaghetti alle vongole. The saline backbone and high acidity also cut through fried food cleanly, making it a strong match for fritto misto or fried artichokes. Try it alongside mild fresh cheeses or a simple herb-dressed white bean salad.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Agricola Cirelli

Francesco Cirelli founded Agricola Cirelli in 2003 with his partner Michela after a career in business, purchasing a 22-hectare farm near the ancient hilltop town of Atri in Teramo province. The estate sits within the Riserva Naturale Calanchi di Atri, a WWF-protected nature reserve defined by dramatic clay badland formations. The farm is 8 kilometers from the Adriatic Sea, a proximity that moderates the local microclimate.

The estate received organic certification in 2006 and biodynamic certification in 2021. Of the 22 hectares, only 6 are planted to vines. The remainder supports olive groves, wheat, barley, figs, aromatic herbs, vegetables, and free-range livestock. Geese roam between vine rows for natural weed control. Crop rotation, natural fertilization, and the absence of all synthetic inputs define the farming approach. Francesco cultivates four indigenous varieties: Montepulciano, Trebbiano, Pecorino, and Cerasuolo.

Cirelli's cellar work is minimal. All fermentations proceed spontaneously with indigenous yeasts. The estate produces two lines: the classic range, which ferments and ages in stainless steel; and the Anfora line, which uses custom terracotta amphorae produced by an artisan in Impruneta, Florence, fitted with stainless steel lids to limit oxidation. No oak is used across any wine. Wines are bottled without fining or filtration and with only minimal added sulfites.

Wine region

Abruzzo, Italy

Abruzzo runs along Italy's central Adriatic coast, bounded by the Gran Sasso massif and the Apennines to the west and the Adriatic Sea to the east. The combination of maritime influence and mountain air creates significant diurnal temperature variation, which helps white grapes retain acidity while reaching full phenolic ripeness. The region's clay and limestone hillside soils are well-drained and mineral-rich.

Abruzzo's main DOC and DOCG appellations include Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, Trebbiano d'Abruzzo, Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo, and the Colline Teramane DOCG in the north. The Colline Pescaresi IGT, established in 1995, covers the Pescara province hills and allows varietal wines from a broad range of grapes including Pecorino, Trebbiano, and Montepulciano. Because the IGT designation covers a more geographically specific area than the region-wide Abruzzo DOC, it can be more informative about provenance. Indigenous varieties Pecorino and Passerina have gained significant attention alongside the dominant Trebbiano and Montepulciano.
