Tasting notes

Lambrusco Grasparossa in the traditional method is genuinely rare — almost all commercial production uses the Charmat tank method. Here the wine is vinified in white and refermented in bottle, giving it a fine, persistent bead and a lifted quality that still carries the grape's signature black cherry, violet, and bitter-almond finish. Zero sulfites, indigenous yeasts, unfiltered: this is as honest a sparkling wine as you'll find.

Lorenzo Primo is a brut rosé spumante made from 100% Lambrusco Grasparossa di Castelvetro, grown on the clay, silt, and sand alluvial soils of Castelfranco Emilia in the Province of Modena. The grapes are vinified in white, meaning the skins are removed before fermentation, producing a pale, fine-bubbled sparkling wine rather than the deep purple style typical of the appellation.

Folicello uses the traditional method (metodo classico) for Lorenzo Primo: after primary fermentation, the wine undergoes secondary fermentation in bottle, the same process used in Champagne. This approach is uncommon for Lambrusco, where tank-method (Charmat) production dominates. No sulfites are added at any stage of production.

The estate spans approximately 10 hectares in Castelfranco Emilia, one of the thirteen communes within the Lambrusco Grasparossa di Castelvetro production zone. Fermentation is spontaneous with indigenous yeasts. The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered, consistent with Folicello's zero-additive approach across its entire range.

At 11% ABV, Lorenzo Primo is light and refreshing, with the bright acidity and fine persistent mousse that the traditional method produces. The Grasparossa grape's characteristic bitter finish and dark fruit core remain present despite the delicate vinification.

Lorenzo Primo's lively acidity and fine mousse cut through fat and salt cleanly. Serve alongside mortadella, prosciutto di Parma, or a board of local salumi — the classic Emilian pairing for Lambrusco. It also works well with fried foods, thin-crust pizza, or aged Parmigiano-Reggiano, where the bitter finish acts as a palate reset between bites.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Producer profile

Folicello

Marco Giovannini and Antonella Fontana founded Folicello in the early 1980s in Castelfranco Emilia, Province of Modena, initially producing wine for personal use and for friends. What began as an informal project gradually developed into a recognized small estate. Their daughter Irene joined the operation in 2022, taking on responsibility for production management, packaging, and logistics.

The estate covers approximately 10 hectares on the alluvial plains of Castelfranco Emilia, with soils composed of clay, silt, and sand. Folicello is certified organic and biodynamic and focuses exclusively on indigenous Emilia-Romagna varieties: Lambrusco Grasparossa, Sangiovese, and Malbo Gentile for reds; Pignoletto, Montuni, Trebbiano, Pinot Bianco, and Malvasia di Candia Aromatica for whites. The estate operates entirely on solar-generated electricity, and marc from fermentation is used to prepare preparations for the vines. Biodiversity is actively maintained, with farm animals kept among the vines.

All wines at Folicello are fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts and are bottled unfined and unfiltered with no sulfites added at any stage of production. Lorenzo Primo follows the traditional method (metodo classico): Lambrusco Grasparossa grapes are vinified in white, the base wine undergoes primary fermentation, and secondary fermentation occurs in bottle to produce the final effervescence. The wine is then disgorged and released as a brut rosé spumante.

Wine region

Emilia-Romagna, Italy

Emilia-Romagna stretches across northern Italy from the Adriatic coast westward toward the Apennine Mountains. The region's viticultural history dates to Etruscan times and today encompasses approximately 60,000 hectares of vines producing both sparkling and still wines. The flat Po Valley plains to the north, where Folicello's vineyards sit, have alluvial soils composed of clay, silt, and sand deposited by centuries of river activity. The Apennine foothills rise to the south, and the town of Castelvetro di Modena — the heartland of Grasparossa production — sits at roughly 60 meters above sea level on low hills with clay and silt-rich soils that give the grape its characteristic tannic structure and deep color.

Emilia-Romagna produces five distinct Lambrusco DOCs: Lambrusco Salamino di Santa Croce, Lambrusco di Sorbara, Lambrusco Grasparossa di Castelvetro, Lambrusco Modena, and Lambrusco Reggiano. Grasparossa di Castelvetro is widely regarded as the most structured of these, producing the most tannic and deeply colored wines, and requires a minimum of 85% Lambrusco Grasparossa grapes. The production zone covers thirteen communes in the Province of Modena, including Castelfranco Emilia where Folicello is located. Beyond Lambrusco, the region grows Sangiovese (roughly 16% of plantings) and Trebbiano (roughly 30%), as well as indigenous whites including Pignoletto, Montuni, and Malvasia di Candia Aromatica.
