Tasting notes

This is Barolo-adjacent in the best way — the fruit comes from actual Barolo crus (Rive in La Morra and Scarrone in Castiglione Falletto), giving it a floral lift and structural depth you rarely find at this price point. The 2016 vintage produced unusually well-integrated tannins, and the star anise finish is a dead giveaway for serious Nebbiolo.

Oddero's Langhe Nebbiolo 2016 is 100% Nebbiolo sourced from parcels within the Barolo DOCG zone — specifically the lower slopes of the Rive cru in La Morra and the base of the Scarrone vineyard in Castiglione Falletto. Both sites sit on clay-dominant soils, which produce a more generous, earlier-drinking expression than the estate's Barolo bottlings from higher ground. The Langhe Nebbiolo DOC, established in 1994, allows top Barolo producers to release Nebbiolo from these parcels without the DOCG's extended aging requirements.

2016 was an exceptional vintage in Piedmont — warm, dry growing conditions produced concentrated fruit with naturally rounded tannins. This wine shows classic Nebbiolo character: woodland cherry, crushed aromatic herbs, and a thread of dark spice on the nose. The palate is linear and medium-bodied, with Marasca cherry, cranberry, and ground clove, finishing on a note of star anise. Tannins are fine-grained and well-integrated for the vintage.

Vinification follows the estate's traditional approach: spontaneous fermentation, no new oak, and aging in large botti. The result is a wine that shows genuine varietal and site character without wood interference. At 14% ABV, it carries the weight of the vintage while remaining precise and food-friendly.

All Nebbiolo vineyards at Oddero are certified organic. The estate, based in the hamlet of Santa Maria in La Morra, has farmed organically since 2007 and completed full certification across their holdings in 2017.

Pair with dishes that have enough acidity and fat to match Nebbiolo's grip and tartness. Tajarin with a meat ragu, osso buco, or roasted chicken with herbs are natural fits. Aged Parmigiano or Toma cheese also work well alongside.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

Producer profile

Oddero

Poderi e Cantine Oddero is based in the hamlet of Santa Maria in the village of La Morra, Piedmont. Parish and township records confirm the Oddero family has been present in La Morra since at least the 18th century. Giovanni Battista Oddero (1794-1874) and his sons began vinifying grapes in La Morra between the 18th and 19th centuries, and by 1878 the first Giacomo Oddero (1851-1915) was selling wines in glass bottles, including exports to the Americas. The modern estate was shaped by Giacomo Oddero (born 1926), who renovated the historic farmhouse in the 1950s and served as the provincial Assessor of Agriculture, signing the disciplinare that established the DOC and DOCG regulations for Langhe and Roero wines. Today the estate is run by the sixth and seventh generations: Giacomo's daughters Mariavittoria and Mariacristina, and their children Isabella and Pietro.

Oddero farms 35 hectares of vineyards across the Langhe and Asti, including prized crus in Bussia (Monforte d'Alba), Brunate and Rive (La Morra), Scarrone (Castiglione Falletto), Villero and Rocche di Castiglione (Castiglione Falletto), Vignarionda (Serralunga d'Alba), Gallina (Neive), and Monvigliero (Verduno). Of these, approximately 16.5-19 hectares are planted to Nebbiolo for Barolo and Barbaresco. The estate began converting to organic in 2008, eliminating all chemical herbicides and managing weeds mechanically. All Nebbiolo, Barbera, and Dolcetto vineyards are certified organic; full organic conversion across all holdings was completed by 2017. Soils on the Barolo parcels are calcareous clay-loam with sand in variable proportions, of Miocene sedimentary origin.

In the cellar, Oddero follows a traditional winemaking approach: spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, no new oak, and aging in large botti (Slavonian and Austrian oak) sized 40 to 75 hectoliters. Maceration times and elevage are adapted to each vintage and wine. The Langhe Nebbiolo sees shorter aging than the estate's Barolo bottlings, in keeping with the appellation's approachable style. The cellar's grass-covered roof acts as a natural insulator for temperature and humidity, and solar panels supply all of the cellar's energy needs.

Wine region

Piedmont, Italy

The Langhe is a UNESCO-recognized landscape of steep, vine-covered hills in southern Piedmont, in Italy's northwest corner, south of the city of Alba and the Tanaro River in the province of Cuneo. The territory encompasses Barolo and Barbaresco, both within the broader Langhe DOC boundaries. Climate is continental with Mediterranean influence — cool Alpine air from the north, warm breezes from the Ligurian coast to the south, and the autumnal fog (nebbia, which gives Nebbiolo its name) that settles in valleys and extends the ripening season for late-harvested Nebbiolo. Soils across the Langhe are primarily calcareous clay-loam of sedimentary origin, formed as the Padanian Sea withdrew during the Miocene period.

The Langhe Nebbiolo DOC was established in 1994 as a separate classification within the Langhe DOC, covering red wines made primarily from Nebbiolo grapes across the Langhe hills, including within the Barolo and Barbaresco zones. It serves as the only legal route for Barolo and Barbaresco producers to declassify fruit from younger vines, lower-elevation parcels, or lighter vintages into an earlier-drinking bottling, without compromising their DOCG wines. Unlike Nebbiolo d'Alba, the Langhe Nebbiolo DOC permits blending up to 15% of other red indigenous varieties such as Barbera or Dolcetto, though top producers typically use 100% Nebbiolo. The appellation carries no minimum aging requirement, allowing wines to reach the market earlier than Barolo (which requires a minimum of 38 months aging before release).
