Tasting notes

The six-hour skin maceration pulls cherry-red color and genuine texture from Montepulciano without tipping into a red wine — the amphora then holds the fruit pure and bright, adding a subtle salty mineral note and an almond-skin bitterness on the finish. It drinks with more substance than almost any rosé at this price, while staying completely fresh.

Agricola Cirelli's Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo Anfora is a 100% Montepulciano rosé from the hills around Atri in Teramo province, grown on clay-limestone soils within a WWF-protected natural reserve roughly 8 kilometers from the Adriatic coast. Grapes are harvested by hand and destemmed, then gently pressed. The must spends just six hours on the skins before the juice is transferred directly into terracotta amphoras for fermentation with indigenous yeasts.

The amphoras are custom-made by a craftsman in Impruneta, Florence — one of Italy's historically important clay-producing areas — and fitted with stainless steel lids that limit oxidation while allowing subtle micro-oxygenation. Fermentation and malolactic conversion both take place inside the amphoras, where the wine then ages for approximately 12 months. No fining agents are used, and only low sulfites are added at bottling.

Cerasuolo is the traditional rosé of Abruzzo, made exclusively from Montepulciano's highly pigmented skins. Even a brief maceration of six hours pulls enough color and structure to produce a wine that reads deeper and more textured than most rosés. This expression through amphora sidesteps any oak influence entirely, letting the mineral quality of the clay and the freshness of the grape speak directly.

The farm is certified organic (IMC certification n.3194 RV.01) and operates as a full polyculture estate: vines share 22 hectares with olive groves, wheat, fig trees, and free-range livestock including sheep and geese, whose grazing provides natural fertilization between vine rows.

Works well with grilled whole fish, seafood pasta, white-fleshed meats like roast chicken or rabbit, and fresh charcuterie boards. The wine's salinity and acidity make it a natural match for briny ingredients — clams, anchovies, or burrata with olive oil. Serve at 50-54°F.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Agricola Cirelli

Francesco Cirelli founded Azienda Agricola Cirelli in 2003 after completing a degree in business administration, purchasing land near the ancient hilltop town of Atri in Teramo province. The property spans 22 hectares, of which approximately 6 are planted to vine, and sits roughly 8 kilometers from the Adriatic coast within a WWF-designated natural reserve. The estate received organic certification from IMC (certification n.3194 RV.01) in 2006.

Cirelli runs the farm as a polyculture operation. Vines grow alongside olive groves, fig trees, wheat, barley, vegetable gardens, and free-range livestock — sheep, geese, and black pigs. The animals graze between vine rows, providing natural fertilization and weed management. No synthetic chemicals are used anywhere on the property. Crop rotation with cereals and aromatic herbs allows the soil to regenerate between seasons.

In the cellar, all fermentations are spontaneous, driven entirely by indigenous yeasts. Cirelli produces two lines: a Classic Line aged in stainless steel, and an Amphora Line aged in custom terracotta vessels made by a craftsman in Impruneta, near Florence — a region historically prized for its high-quality clay. Each amphora holds approximately 800 liters and is fitted with a stainless steel lid to reduce oxidation during fermentation. The amphoras are neutral vessels: they impart no flavor and allow gentle micro-oxygenation, letting the grape and terroir express directly. No fining agents are used; low sulfites are added at bottling.

Wine region

Abruzzo, Italy

Abruzzo occupies central-eastern Italy between the Adriatic Sea and the Apennine Mountains, bordering Marche to the north, Lazio to the west, and Molise to the south. The region is dramatically diverse in elevation and climate: within roughly 40 kilometers you move from the sandy Adriatic coast to the foothills and then up to Gran Sasso, the Apennines' highest peak at 2,912 meters, where Europe's southernmost glacier sits. This range creates distinct microclimates across the four provinces of Teramo, Pescara, Chieti, and L'Aquila. More than 30% of Abruzzo's territory is protected by national parks and nature reserves, including the WWF reserve where Cirelli's vineyards are located.

Abruzzo's key red grape is Montepulciano, which forms the basis of both Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC (established 1968) and the separate Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo DOC (created 2010), the latter dedicated entirely to the region's traditional rosé style. Cerasuolo requires a minimum of 85% Montepulciano and covers vineyards planted below 500 meters across all four provinces. The name cerasuolo means cherry-red and refers to the deep color Montepulciano's highly pigmented skins yield even from brief maceration. The northern Teramo province, where Cirelli farms, falls within the Colline Teramane DOCG zone — recognized for producing some of Abruzzo's most structured and site-specific wines. Soils in the area around Atri are predominantly clay and limestone, contributing characteristic acidity and mineral definition.
