Organic Wine

Certified organic wine begins in the vineyard. Organic certification prohibits the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, and chemical fertilisers, requiring producers to manage their vines through natural means: cover crops, composting, copper-sulphur treatments, and biodiversity. The grapes that result are healthier, more expressive of their terroir, and free from the residues that accumulate in conventionally farmed fruit.

We will process and ship your order in 2-3 business days, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with tracking as soon as the Carrier scans the shipping label.

Ground shipping time depends on location, here's a breakdown:

West Coast: 1-2 business days
Midwest: 3-4 business days
East Coast: 5 business days

Process time is not shipping time. Shipping time starts from the days successive to the day of shipping, after the order has been processed.

See here our shipping policy.

Signature on delivery is mandatory for wine deliveries. Please make sure someone is at the shipping address to sign for the package.

If applicable, please consider delivering the package to a business address to ensure someone is available to sign for the package.

We also have the option of delivering the package to a Carrier's store for pickup. Please reach out to us to coordinate.

Carrier will try to delivery a package up to three times before returning the package to us.

See here our shipping policy.

If you miss a delivery and a package gets returned to us we have two options:

1) Reship the package right away: due to the very high cost of shipping and returns, we must charge a re-shipping fee to be determined based on package size and shipping destination.

2) Consolidate the returned package with your next order: this option is free of charge and it's the most popular option.

See here our shipping policy.

Organic wine is made from grapes grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers. Farmers who follow organic practices rely instead on composting, cover cropping, and natural pest management to maintain healthy soil and productive vines. In the cellar, organic winemakers tend to minimize additives and avoid synthetic processing aids, which means what ends up in the bottle is a cleaner, more direct expression of the grape and its growing environment. In the United States, organic certification is overseen by the USDA, while European producers follow EU organic standards. At Primal Wine, the organic wine collection spans more than 1,300 bottles from producers across Italy, France, Austria, Spain, Germany, the United States, and beyond, all of whom have committed to chemical-free viticulture.

The most fundamental difference lies in how the grapes are farmed. Conventional viticulture permits the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers throughout the growing season. Organic farming eliminates these entirely, relying on natural soil-building techniques and biodiversity to keep vines healthy. Over time, organically farmed vineyards tend to develop richer microbial ecosystems and deeper root systems, which many winemakers believe contributes to more complex and terroir-driven wines. In the winery, conventional producers have access to dozens of permitted additives and processing aids. Organic producers typically use far fewer, though the degree of intervention varies by producer. Many drinkers also report fewer sensitivities, such as headaches, when drinking organic wine, likely due to lower residual synthetic compounds and often lower sulfite levels, though individual responses vary.

They overlap, but they are not the same. Organic wine is defined by how the grapes are farmed: certified organic producers follow specific standards and undergo annual inspections to verify compliance. Natural wine is a broader philosophy that covers both farming and winemaking. All natural wines start with organically or biodynamically grown grapes, but they also emphasize minimal intervention in the cellar: native yeast fermentation, no fining or heavy filtration, and little to no added sulfites. A wine can be certified organic without being natural in the traditional sense, especially if the winemaker uses commercial yeasts or significant additives after harvest. At Primal Wine, many bottles in the organic wine collection are also natural wines, made by producers who view organic certification as a starting point rather than the finish line.

Often, yes, but not always. Sulfites are a natural byproduct of fermentation, so every wine contains some amount of them. The question is how much sulfur dioxide is added during the winemaking process as a preservative. Organic certification in the United States actually prohibits the addition of sulfites, meaning USDA-certified organic wines must have no added sulfur dioxide. European organic standards permit small additions, though typically at lower levels than conventional wine. Natural and low-intervention organic producers at Primal Wine often keep sulfite additions very low or skip them entirely. Total sulfites in the wines on this collection page typically range from around 10 to 80 parts per million, well below the 350 ppm allowed in conventional winemaking. Each product page notes the sulfite level for shoppers who are monitoring their intake.

Yes, and a growing number of the most respected classic wine producers in Europe now farm organically. Organic certification has become increasingly common across Burgundy, the Loire Valley, Alsace, Piedmont, and Tuscany, as growers recognize that healthier soils produce more expressive and site-specific wines. Some of the most iconic wine estates in Italy and France, including producers of Barolo, Brunello di Montalcino, and premier cru Burgundy, have pursued organic or biodynamic certification in recent decades. At Primal Wine, several bottles in the organic collection carry the "Classic" label, meaning they come from historically significant regions and are made in a traditional style, while still meeting organic farming standards. Shoppers looking for classic Italian or French wines that are also organic will find options from Piedmont, Tuscany, Veneto, Burgundy, the Loire Valley, and Bordeaux, among others.

Primal Wine ships organic wine to 45 states across the United States, with orders processed and dispatched within 2 to 3 business days. The organic collection includes more than 1,300 bottles spanning red, white, orange, rosé, and sparkling styles, from producers in Italy, France, Austria, Spain, Germany, the United States, Australia, and more. Prices start around $20 per bottle, with options ranging up to prestige-level releases. Orders over $299 ship free. For shoppers who want a curated introduction to organic wine, the Primal Wine natural wine club sends a hand-selected case of bottles each month, with tasting notes and a recipe included.
