Tasting notes

This is Vermentino stripped of any winemaking artifice: no oak, no selected yeasts, no fining, and sulfites barely registering at 11 mg/L. What you get is the pure expression of calcareous coastal Sardinian terroir — ripe white peach and pear framed by a pronounced salty, mineral finish that is unmistakably Romangia. For a natural white at this price, the textural weight and length of flavor are genuinely rare.

Renosu Vermentino is a 100% Vermentino from Tenute Dettori's estate in Badde Nigolosu, a natural amphitheater in the Romangia del Logudoro zone of northwest Sardinia, situated roughly 4 kilometers from the Gulf of Asinara at 250 to 300 meters elevation. The name Renosu is Sardinian for sand, a nod to the coastal limestone, sandstone, and calcarenite soils of Miocene origin that define the vineyard's character. Vines are trained to the traditional low-bush alberello style with no irrigation, at a density of 5,000 to 7,000 plants per hectare.

Tenute Dettori farms biodynamically and holds Demeter certification, working exclusively with ancient indigenous clones native to Sardinia. No synthetic chemicals are used in the vineyard or cellar. Grapes are hand-harvested and sorted on a steel selection table, then de-stemmed and fermented with native yeasts in open concrete vats. The wine is never fined or filtered, clarifying only through natural gravity settling aided by cold cellar temperatures. Sulfite levels are extremely low, at around 11 mg/L with no addition at fermentation.

Dettori deliberately classifies this wine under IGT rather than the Vermentino di Sardegna DOC, a deliberate choice to emphasize the Badde Nigolosu terroir over varietal designation. The Renosu line is drawn from grapes not selected for the single-cru estate wines, making it Dettori's everyday expression. In the glass it shows an intense straw yellow color, aromas of ripe pear, white peach, and tropical fruit, with a savory, mineral, and distinctly saline finish characteristic of the coastal limestone site.

This is a non-vintage wine, meaning Dettori blends across multiple harvests to maintain consistency of character rather than committing to any single year. It is unoaked, with all aging and maturation done in small concrete tanks.

A natural match for anything from the sea: grilled branzino, spaghetti alle vongole, grilled prawns, or the Sardinian classic fregola with clams. The wine's salinity and white fruit weight also hold up well alongside mild pecorino, ricotta, or herb-forward vegetable dishes.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

Producer profile

Tenute Dettori

The Dettori family has farmed land and produced wine in Badde Nigolosu, near the town of Sennori in the province of Sassari, since the early 1900s. For most of that period, wine was sold in bulk in demijohns. It was not until 1981 that Paolo Dettori began bottling part of the production. The modern estate project, formalized in 1996 under the heading 'Vignaioli Artigiani del Vino e della Terra in Badde Nigolosu,' was driven by Alessandro Dettori, who began working alongside his father around 1990.

Tenute Dettori farms approximately 24 hectares in the Badde Nigolosu cru, a natural amphitheater facing northwest toward the Gulf of Asinara at 250 to 300 meters elevation, about 4 kilometers from the sea. Soils are predominantly calcareous — organogenic limestones, calcarenites, sandstones, and Miocene conglomerates — and pale yellow in appearance. Vines are trained to the traditional Sardinian alberello (bush vine) style without irrigation, at a density of 5,000 to 7,000 plants per hectare. Some Cannonau vines on the estate were planted in 1883. Dettori holds Demeter biodynamic certification, making it one of the first estates in Italy to receive that designation. No synthetic chemicals are used at any point.

In the cellar, Alessandro Dettori works exclusively in concrete vats for both fermentation and maturation. Grapes are hand-harvested, sorted on a steel table, de-stemmed but not pressed, and left to ferment with native yeasts. No temperature control, added enzymes, or clarification agents are used. The wines are never filtered or fined, relying on natural gravity settling and cold winter cellar temperatures to stabilize. Dettori deliberately forgoes the Vermentino di Sardegna DOC and Cannonau di Sardegna DOC designations in favor of IGT Romangia, to draw attention to the specific Badde Nigolosu terroir. Wines are bottled up to two to three years after harvest.

Wine region

Sardegna, Italy

Sardinia is a large Mediterranean island off the western coast of the Italian peninsula with a winemaking history stretching back thousands of years. The island's interior is mountainous and rugged, while the coasts are largely limestone-based, with soils ranging from calcarenites and sandstones in the northwest to granite in the northeastern Gallura zone. The climate is warm and dry with significant maritime influence, particularly in coastal areas where sea breezes from the Gulf of Asinara and surrounding waters moderate summer heat.

The Romangia area in the northwestern corner of Sardinia — historically called Logudoro, meaning 'golden place' in Sardinian — is the principal zone for Vermentino as well as Cannonau and Moscato di Sennori. Tenute Dettori operates within the Badde Nigolosu sub-zone of Romangia, which carries the IGT Romangia designation. The two key Vermentino appellations on the island are the island-wide Vermentino di Sardegna DOC, which requires a minimum of 85% Vermentino, and the more prestigious Vermentino di Gallura DOCG in the northeast, produced on granite soils. Dettori deliberately opts out of both DOC frameworks, using the IGT classification to foreground terroir over varietal labeling.
