Tasting notes

This wine shows what Ribolla Gialla does with just three days on skins: mandarin peel, bitter herbs, and a saline snap from the Ponka soil, all carried by razor-sharp acidity. It is one of the most food-friendly orange wines at this price, with enough texture to hold its own at the table without demanding patience.

Quinto Quarto Rebula is 100% Ribolla Gialla grown on a single vineyard plot on Monte Calvario, at 150 meters above sea level in San Floriano del Collio. The soil is Ponka, the local name for Eocene-era flysch: layered clay-filled marl and sandstone originally formed from an ancient seabed. The elevation and south-southwest exposure give the fruit concentrated acidity and clean aromatics.

Grapes are hand-harvested and fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts. Skin contact lasts approximately 3 days, giving the wine its amber-gold color and light textural grip without heavy tannin. Aging takes place entirely in stainless steel for 8 to 10 months, preserving the variety's naturally high acidity and bright fruit character. The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered with no added sulfur.

Ribolla Gialla is native to Friuli and was first documented in the region in 1289. In its skin-contact form it shows mandarin peel, bitter herbs, and a saline mineral edge that reflects the Ponka soil. This is the entry-level expression in the Terpin lineup, designed for earlier drinking than his longer-macerated Stamas wines, but it carries the same terroir clarity.

Works well with briny foods: grilled oily fish, raw oysters, or a plate of cured meats and aged Montasio cheese. The acidity and slight bitterness also cut through fried foods cleanly. Try it slightly below room temperature, around 52 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Franco Terpin

Franco Terpin was born and raised in Collio Goriziano and grew up farming alongside his brothers on land his father and grandfather worked in San Floriano del Collio, a small hamlet near the Slovenian border. In 1994, Franco and his wife founded the winery formally. The estate covers approximately 12 hectares, with vineyard plots on both the Italian side around Monte Calvario and on the Slovenian side of the border, at elevations ranging from 120 to 320 meters above sea level.

The vineyards are farmed organically and biodynamically, without synthetic chemicals. Soils are predominantly Ponka. Grape varieties include Ribolla Gialla, Malvasia Istriana, Friulano, Pinot Grigio, and Merlot. Terpin thins bunches to control yields and favors spontaneous ground cover to promote biodiversity in the vineyard.

In the cellar, all fermentations use indigenous yeasts with no added sulfur. Wines in the Quinto Quarto line undergo 3 days of skin maceration and are aged 8 to 10 months in stainless steel. Wines in the Stamas line receive significantly longer maceration and aging in Slavonian oak. All wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered. Annual production is approximately 30,000 to 35,000 bottles across the full portfolio.

Wine region

Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy

Collio, formally Collio Goriziano DOC, sits in the northeastern tip of Italy within the province of Gorizia, bordering Slovenia along the Gorizia Hills. The appellation received DOC status in 1968, the first in Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Vineyards are restricted to hillside sites only; the DOC bans flat-land cultivation. The climate is shaped by two opposing forces: cold air descending from the Julian Alps to the north, and warm Adriatic breezes from the south, creating pronounced diurnal temperature swings that preserve acidity in the grapes.

The signature soil of Collio is Ponka, an Eocene-era flysch composed of alternating layers of calcareous marl and sandstone. Rich in calcium carbonate and ancient marine fossils, it drains well while retaining enough moisture for balanced vine growth and imparts a distinctive saline minerality to the wines. The primary white varieties grown under the DOC are Friulano, Ribolla Gialla, Malvasia Istriana, Pinot Grigio, and Pinot Bianco. Collio is internationally recognized as the heartland of Italian orange wine, with producers such as Josko Gravner, Stanko Radikon, and Franco Terpin pioneering extended skin-contact winemaking in the region from the 1990s onward.
