Tasting notes

Burnished amber-gold with warm copper highlights and a natural haze. The nose is complex and aromatic, with honey, ripe apricot, nectarine, Mediterranean herbs, smoked quince, beeswax, and a saline mineral thread from the volcanic soils. On the palate, full-bodied and dry, with firm texture, lively acidity, and a very long mineral finish.

Taste profile
  • Style: Dry, full-bodied orange wine; the two-to-five-day skin maceration is deliberately modest compared to many orange wines — Angiolino believes extended maceration causes oxidation that erases varietal character, making all whites taste the same; the result is a wine with orange-wine texture and a burnished amber color but without the sherry-like character of heavier macerations; 12 months in large neutral oak add complexity and roundness; the volcanic basalt terroir drives a pronounced saline minerality that defines the wine's long finish; Pico can age for many years
  • Grapes & terroir: 100% Garganega from three selected high-altitude vineyard parcels (Monte di Mezzo, Faldeo, and Taibane) on volcanic basalt and tufa soils at 490–980 ft elevation in Gambellara; organically and biodynamically farmed for decades with no soil treatments or synthetic inputs; south-facing slopes protected from Alpine winds by the Dolomites; the nearly black volcanic soil retains heat, drains freely, and concentrates flavor at low natural yields
  • Winemaking: Hand-harvested; spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts only; 2–5 days skin maceration; 12 months aging in large neutral oak casks (15-hl); no temperature control; no fining; no filtration; no added sulfites at any stage
  • Serving temperature & decanting: Serve at 58–62°F; decant 30–45 minutes — the wine opens considerably with air, with the mineral and stone fruit complexity developing in the glass over an hour; it can also be served slightly more chilled as an aperitif
  • Pairing: Baccalà alla vicentina (the traditional Vicenza salt cod dish braised slowly in milk with onions and anchovies)
  • Similar to: Radikon Ribolla Gialla in its volcanic mineral character, Dinavolo by Az. Agr. Denavolo in its extended white-grape aging, Gravner Breg in its restrained-maceration approach to skin-contact whites

La Biancara Angiolino Maule Pico Orange 2020 is a dry orange wine made from 100% Garganega, hand-selected from three high-altitude vineyard crus — Monte di Mezzo, Faldeo, and Taibane — on the volcanic hills of Gambellara, Province of Vicenza, Veneto. The basalt and volcanic tufa soils at 490 to 980 feet elevation give the wine its characteristic mineral salinity. Angiolino Maule of La Biancara ferments spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, macerates on the skins for two to five days, and ages the wine for 12 months in large neutral oak casks. La Biancara Angiolino Maule Pico Orange 2020 is bottled without filtration and without added sulfites. Veneto IGT.

Baccalà alla vicentina, Japanese miso-glazed black cod, aged Sopressa Vicentina, risotto ai funghi, vitello tonnato, saffron risotto, grilled sardines, roast pork, porcini bruschetta, aged Monte Veronese.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

La Biancara

La Biancara was founded in 1988 by Angiolino Maule and his wife Rosamaria in the hamlet of Biancara, in the village of Sorio di Gambellara. The starting point was modest: a farmhouse with around six hectares of land, some of it planted with old Garganega vines. Angiolino and Rosamaria had spent a decade running a pizzeria and bar, saving enough money to buy the property. In the evenings at the bar, Angiolino listened and learned from the local winemakers who came in — including producers from the great estates of Soave — and built his understanding of the vineyard and cellar before he had one of his own.

His first wines in 1988 were made conventionally. The transformation came in the early 1990s when Angiolino began spending time with a circle of Friuli winemakers that included Josko Gravner and Stanko Radikon, who were then returning to extended skin maceration and zero-additive winemaking. Their influence reshaped Angiolino's thinking entirely. He committed to farming without any synthetic inputs, abandoned all winery additives, and began working toward what he describes as transforming solar energy directly into wine — a goal he has never stopped pursuing.

In 2000, Angiolino founded VinNatur, the natural wine producers' association that today brings together producers from across Italy and beyond, and organizes the Villa Favorita tasting fair in Vicenza, one of the most important gatherings for natural wine internationally. La Biancara's estate has grown to 18 hectares across Gambellara and the nearby Colli Berici hills. Angiolino works alongside his sons Francesco, Alessandro, Giacomo, and Tommaso. Most of the estate's wines are classified as Veneto IGT rather than Gambellara DOC, as the consorzio does not consider Angiolino's approach typical of the appellation.

Wine region

Veneto, Italy

Gambellara is a small DOC in the Province of Vicenza in the Veneto, sitting at the foot of the ancient Calvarina volcano roughly 25 miles east of Verona and immediately adjacent to the more famous Soave appellation. Geologically, Gambellara is the continuation of the volcanic Soave hillsides as they cross from the Province of Verona into Vicenza — the grape is the same, the soils are the same, and the wines share the same Garganega foundation, but the name changes with the provincial border.

The defining feature of Gambellara is its volcanic origin. Basalt and volcanic tufa — the result of lava flows and volcanic ash deposits from the Calvarina and surrounding ancient volcanoes — form an almost black, rocky, free-draining soil structure that is unlike anything produced by alluvial or limestone geology. The basalt is rich in potassium, magnesium, and trace minerals released as the rock slowly degrades, and these minerals impart a pronounced saline character to wines grown on them that is one of Gambellara's most consistent signatures. The hills are steep, south-facing, and exposed to the sun, while the southern Dolomites protect the vineyards from the coldest northern Alpine winds, allowing a long, even growing season despite the elevation.

Gambellara received DOC status in 1970 — two years before Soave — but has remained far more obscure than its neighbor. This is partly a consequence of scale: Soave's production zone is vastly larger and produces volumes that Gambellara cannot match, and it was Soave rather than Gambellara that captured the attention of export markets in the 1980s. Production in Gambellara remains dominated by the local cooperative and by the traditional Garganega-based dry white and sweet Recioto. The significant exception is the small cluster of artisan producers working the volcanic hillsides organically — above all Angiolino Maule, whose influence on the zone and on Italian natural wine more broadly is substantial.
