Tasting notes

Kisi is one of the rarest indigenous Kakheti grapes, and in qvevri amber form it delivers apricot, dried pear, walnut, and tobacco with a firm tannic grip that most orange wines cannot match. The Rkatsiteli keeps the acidity vivid and the finish long, giving this wine genuine aging ability and unusual structure for a skin-contact white.

Lekso's Marani is a small family winery in the village of Akhashani, Akhmeta Municipality, Kakheti. Owner Lekso Pitskhelauri produces all of his wines in qvevri, the traditional egg-shaped Georgian clay vessels, some of which are nearly a century old and belonged to his grandfather. This Kisi-Rkatsiteli blend is fermented and aged entirely in qvevri with several weeks of skin contact on the grape solids, including skins, seeds, and stems, which is the traditional Kakhetian method.

Kisi is an indigenous Kakheti white grape that was nearly extinct by the early 2000s due to disease pressure and yields 25-30% lower than Rkatsiteli. In qvevri amber wines, Kisi develops flavors of ripe apricot, pear, honey, and walnut, with floral and spice character layered by skin contact. Rkatsiteli, the more widely planted partner, brings high natural acidity and firm tannin structure, making it one of the most qvevri-suited grapes in Georgia.

Skin contact in qvevri extracts tannins, color, and texture from the grape skins, producing the wine's characteristic deep amber hue and grippy but integrated tannins. The buried clay vessel moderates fermentation temperature naturally. No additives or sulfites are used in the winemaking. The result is a dry, structured amber wine with the savory, oxidative edge typical of the Kakhetian qvevri style.

Lekso's Marani produces approximately 8,000 bottles annually, 70% of which are exported. The winery's vineyards cover 2.5 hectares in Akhmeta, though Lekso also sources fruit from neighboring Kakheti growers in some years.

The tannin and acidity in this wine make it a strong match for fatty or protein-rich dishes: roast pork, grilled lamb chops, aged hard cheeses, or chicken with creamy herb sauces. It also holds up well against spiced dishes and walnut-based sauces common in Georgian cuisine. Serve at 57-62F rather than fully chilled to let the tannin and aromatics open up.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

Producer profile

Lekso's Marani

Lekso's Marani is a family-owned winery in the village of Akhashani, within the Akhmeta Municipality of Kakheti, approximately 12 km from the town of Akhmeta. The winery is named after owner Lekso Pitskhelauri's grandfather, who built the original cellar and acquired the qvevri vessels that are still in use today, some of which are nearly 100 years old and range in size from 5 liters to 2.2 tons. Lekso formally opened the winery under its current operation in 2015.

The estate vineyards cover 2.5 hectares in Akhmeta, with Lekso sourcing additional fruit from neighboring Kakheti growers in certain vintages. Grape varieties grown include Rkatsiteli, Kisi, Mtsvane, Saperavi, Jananura (Khikhvi), and Pink Muscat, alongside rarer local varieties such as Maghranuli and Jgia. The winery applies organic farming processes to its own vineyards.

All wines at Lekso's Marani are made exclusively in qvevri using traditional Kakhetian methods: grapes are fermented on their skins, seeds, and stems in the clay vessels, which are then sealed and aged underground. No oak barrels are used. Current production is approximately 8,000 bottles per year, with 70% exported to markets including Germany, Austria, Poland, and the United States. The winery has a total qvevri fermentation and aging capacity of 20 tons.

Wine region

Kakheti, Georgia

Kakheti is eastern Georgia's dominant wine region, stretching across the Alazani River valley between the Greater Caucasus Mountains and the border with Azerbaijan. The region accounts for approximately 76% of Georgia's vineyard hectares and produces around 80% of the country's grape harvest. Twenty of Georgia's roughly 29-30 PDO appellations are located in Kakheti, including Tsinandali, Mukuzani, Kindzmarauli, and Napareuli. Vineyards are cultivated at elevations of 250 to 800 meters above sea level, with the Alazani Valley floor planted more densely and higher-elevation hillside sites producing wines of greater aromatic complexity.

Kakheti's climate is continental, shaped by dry air from the Caspian Sea and moist Atlantic air masses blocked by the Likhi Ridge to the west. Summers are warm and dry, winters cold, with rainfall concentrated in spring and autumn. The signature soils are a distinctive 'cinnamonic' type: sandy, reddish, calcareous clays high in iron, which contribute the earthy, mineral depth characteristic of Kakhetian wines. Valley floors carry alluvial soils while higher slopes shift to cinnamonic and forest soils. The region's two benchmark grapes are Rkatsiteli (white) and Saperavi (red), though indigenous varieties including Kisi, Mtsvane, and Khikhvi are gaining wider recognition. UNESCO inscribed the Georgian qvevri winemaking method as Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2013.
