Tasting notes

This is a textbook example of traditional Kakhetian amber winemaking from a tiny family producer — dried apricot, quince, orange peel, and walnut-skin tannins built over weeks of skin contact in century-old qvevri. The Khikhvi grape, rarely exported, brings a honeyed aromatic lift that distinguishes this from a pure Rkatsiteli amber. At 12.5% ABV, it carries more textural weight and phenolic grip than the label implies.

Lekso's Marani is a family winery in the village of Akhashani, Akhmeta Municipality, Kakheti. Owner Lekso Pitskhelauri ferments all of his wines in qvevri — large egg-shaped clay vessels buried underground — some of which are over a century old. This 2017 amber wine blends two indigenous Kakhetian white varieties: Khikhvi, which is known locally in the Akhmeta district as Jananura, and Rkatsiteli, one of the oldest documented grape varieties in the world.

Fermentation takes place in qvevri with full skin, seed, and stem contact for several weeks, following the traditional Kakhetian method. The buried vessels maintain a stable underground temperature throughout fermentation and aging, allowing the wine to develop structure and complexity without temperature control equipment or additives. No commercial yeast or SO2 additions are used.

The result is a dry amber wine with the tannic grip and textural weight typical of extended Kakhetian skin contact. Khikhvi contributes its characteristic notes of dried apricot, quince, and honey, while Rkatsiteli adds high natural acidity, orange peel, and walnut-skin tannins. The wine drinks with more structure than its 12.5% ABV suggests.

Lekso's Marani produces around 8,000 bottles annually from 2.5 hectares of estate vineyards, with 70% of production exported. The winery opened commercially in 2015, though the family cellar itself dates back at least a century to Lekso's grandfather.

The tannin structure and oxidative complexity here work well with fatty, umami-rich foods. Pair with aged sheep's milk cheese, roasted lamb with herbs, or walnut-based Georgian dishes like satsivi. It also holds up well alongside spiced dishes featuring cumin, coriander, or turmeric — the phenolics cut through richness without overwhelming aromatics.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Lekso's Marani

Lekso's Marani is a family-owned winery located in the village of Akhashani, Akhmeta Municipality, in the Kakheti region of eastern Georgia. The winery is named after owner Lekso Pitskhelauri's grandfather, who built the original wine cellar. Some of the qvevri vessels currently in use date back over a century and belonged to the grandfather as well. Lekso opened the winery commercially in 2015 and today produces approximately 8,000 bottles annually, with around 70% exported to markets including Germany, Austria, Poland, and the United States.

The estate vineyards cover 2.5 hectares, though Lekso also sources grapes from other Kakheti growers in strong vintages. Grape varieties grown include Rkatsiteli, Mtsvane, Kisi, Saperavi, Khikhvi (known locally in Akhmeta as Jananura), and Pink Muscat. The winery has a total qvevri capacity of 20 tons.

Every wine at Lekso's Marani is fermented and aged in qvevri following the traditional Kakhetian method: grapes are pressed and the juice, skins, stems, and seeds ferment together in the buried clay vessels with no addition of commercial yeasts or sulfites. The wine is aged in sealed qvevri after fermentation. Some vessels used for aging are the same century-old qvevri used by the founder's grandfather.

Wine region

Kakheti, Georgia

Kakheti occupies eastern Georgia between the Greater Caucasus range to the north and the Tsiv-Gombori ridge to the south, with the Alazani River valley at its viticultural core. The region accounts for roughly 76.7% of Georgia's approximately 55,000 hectares of vineyards and produces around 80% of the country's total grape harvest. Vineyards are cultivated at altitudes of 250 to 800 meters above sea level. The climate is continental — hot, dry summers and cold winters — shaped by dry air from the Caspian Sea and limited Atlantic moisture, which is largely blocked by the Likhi Ridge to the west.

Kakheti's signature soils are known locally as 'cinnamonic': sandy, reddish, calcareous clays high in iron, found across the region's key wine-growing zones, with alluvial soils on valley floors and forest soils on higher slopes. The region contains 20 of Georgia's recognized PDO appellations, including Tsinandali, Mukuzani, Kvareli, Kindzmarauli, Napareuli, and Akhasheni. Rkatsiteli and Saperavi are the dominant planted varieties, though indigenous whites like Khikhvi, Kisi, and Mtsvane are grown throughout. In 2013, UNESCO inscribed the traditional Georgian qvevri winemaking method on its Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
