Tasting notes

Fifteen days of skin contact on Chardonnay gives this wine a texture and amber-gold color you would never expect from the grape, while the limestone and clay soils of Noto push the flavor toward stone fruit, yellow flowers, and a streak of flint rather than butter or vanilla. The bâtonnage schedule tied to moon phases is not a marketing detail — it is the actual winemaking calendar Marabino has followed since biodynamic conversion in 2008.

Marabino's Eureka is a 100% Chardonnay orange wine from Contrada Buonivini in the Noto area of southeastern Sicily, classified as Terre Siciliane IGT. The grapes come from two estate vineyard plots with different soil profiles: one on limestone-gray soils alongside an Arab-built water drain channel, and one on deep black-clay soils. Both vineyards sit between 33 and 44 meters above sea level, less than 7 kilometers from the sea.

Fermentation uses only indigenous yeasts, with the must in full skin contact inside stainless steel tanks for approximately 15 days. The wine then stays in stainless steel until the following spring with continuous bâtonnage, timed to the lunar calendar. No oenological additives are used at any stage, and no sulfites are added.

Marabino has practiced certified organic and biodynamic farming since 2008 across all 27-plus hectares in Contrada Buonivini. Winemaker Pierpaolo Messina, who has managed the estate since 2008, built the on-site cellar in 2007 adjacent to the vineyards. All grapes are estate-grown and hand-harvested; nothing is purchased from outside. The result is an orange wine that skips the international Chardonnay blueprint entirely and reads instead as a product of south-eastern Sicily's calcareous clay terrain, sun, and wind.

Pair with grilled swordfish or tuna, which match the wine's weight and saline edge. Aged pecorino siciliano works well against the phenolic texture from the skin contact. It also holds its own alongside arancini, caponata, or pasta dishes with sardines and breadcrumbs.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Primal Wine Selection

Marabino was created in 2002 as a spin-off from Natura Iblea, a family-owned organic fruit and vegetable company established in 1996 in Contrada Buonivini, in the territory of Noto, southeastern Sicily. In the early years the estate owned vineyards but not a cellar, so wine was made at external facilities. The on-site winery was completed in 2007, adjacent to the vineyards.

Pierpaolo Messina has managed Marabino since 2008. After studying in Siena and gaining exposure to Tuscan producers practicing biodynamic agriculture, he returned to Sicily and converted the estate to certified organic and biodynamic farming. Since that conversion, no synthetic chemicals have been used in the vineyard and no oenological additives are used in the cellar. The estate now covers 27 or more hectares of vineyards, orchards, and olive groves in a single contrada, all farmed biodynamically with manual harvest only.

Marabino's winemaking philosophy centers on indigenous yeasts, spontaneous fermentation, and zero additive intervention. Bâtonnage is carried out on a lunar calendar schedule. The Eureka Chardonnay is vinified with 12 to 15 days of skin contact in stainless steel, then aged in stainless steel on the lees until the following spring. The estate focuses on Nero d'Avola and Moscato di Noto as its core varieties, with Chardonnay — grown in two parcels on differing soil profiles — representing a deliberate outlier shaped entirely by the Buonivini terroir rather than the international varietal template.

Wine region

Sicily, Italy

Sicily is Italy's largest island and its southernmost major wine region, separated from the mainland by the Strait of Messina. The climate is Mediterranean, defined by hot, dry summers, mild winters, and consistent sun — the Noto area in the southeastern province of Syracuse is among the sunniest zones in Europe. Soils vary significantly across the island: the northeast is dominated by volcanic basalt from Mount Etna, while the southeast, where Marabino sits, features predominantly calcareous clay with mineral-rich chromatic variation from limestone-white to clay-black.

Sicily's wine appellations include the prestigious Etna DOC on the volcano's slopes, where Nerello Mascalese and Carricante define the reds and whites, and the Noto DOC in the southeast, which focuses on Moscato Bianco and Nero d'Avola. The broader Terre Siciliane IGT classification, established in 2011, covers the entire island and allows winemakers flexibility to work with both native and international varieties outside the stricter DOC frameworks. This is where Marabino's Chardonnay-based Eureka falls, alongside a range of other producers experimenting across Sicily's diverse terroir.
