Tasting notes

The 30-day skin maceration pulls genuine tannin and texture out of Roditis, a grape usually bottled as a neutral white, producing something far more structured: dried apricot, hibiscus, and mineral grip that hold together long on the palate. Aged in clay amphora, it stays earthy and alive rather than oxidized or flat.

A-Grafo Roditis is made from 100% Roditis, a pink-to-gray-skinned grape that is the most widely planted white variety in Greece. Grown on the foothills of Mount Agrafa in Karditsa, Thessaly, the estate's certified organic vineyards sit at around 200 meters elevation and produce extremely low yields of 28 hectoliters per hectare. No irrigation or fertilizers are used.

The wine is made in the Ramato style: whole-cluster maceration on the skins for approximately 30 days, spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts, and naturally completed malolactic fermentation. After maceration, the wine is aged for 2 to 3 months in clay amphora. It is bottled as free-run juice only, unfiltered, unfined, and with zero added sulfites.

In the glass, the wine is a deep golden-amber. The nose leads with concentrated yellow stone fruit, dried apricot, and hibiscus, followed by a mineral undercurrent that reflects the inland terroir of the Agrafa foothills. The palate is structured and persistent, with the variety's signature sharp acidity driving a long, dry finish. This is a textural orange wine with genuine grip and a savory edge.

Works well alongside grilled whole fish, particularly sea bream or bass, where the wine's acidity cuts through the fat. The tannic grip and mineral edge also hold up to aged hard cheeses like graviera or kefalotyri. Try it with a mezze spread of hummus, grilled halloumi, and herb-marinated olives.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Kontozisis

Kontozisis Organic Vineyards is a family estate in Karditsa, Thessaly, operated by Andreas Kontozisis and his partner Aphrodite Tousia. The estate holds approximately 11 to 12 hectares of estate-owned vineyards on the foothills of Mount Agrafa. Andreas Kontozisis has held certified organic farming and vinification status since 1991, making him one of the earliest producers in Greece to receive that certification. The estate works with indigenous varieties including Roditis, Limniona, Malagousia, and Assyrtiko, among others.

All grapes are hand-harvested from low-yield vines producing 28 hectoliters per hectare. No irrigation or fertilizers are used. Winemaking is entirely low-intervention: spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts for all wines, free-run juice only with no press wine used, and no commercial yeasts, enzymes, or chemical additions. The estate uses a mix of vessels including concrete, amphorae, stainless steel, and old oak barrels depending on the cuvée. Wines are not filtered, settling naturally before bottling. The A-Grafo range represents the estate's zero-addition wines, bottled unfiltered and unsulfured.

Wine region

Thessaly, Greece

Karditsa sits in the western part of Thessaly in central Greece. PGI Karditsa requires all vineyards to be planted at more than 100 meters above sea level, excluding the flat, lower-quality sections of the Thessalian plain. The terrain is defined by two topographic bands: the mountainous foothills of the Southern Pindos and Agrafa ranges to the southwest, and portions of a wider agricultural plain to the northeast. Kontozisis vineyards are on the Agrafa foothills at approximately 200 meters elevation, spread across two distinct terroirs between the villages of Kanalia and Dafnospilia.

The climate in Karditsa is strongly continental due to its inland position. Summers are hot and dry with low precipitation; mountain formations provide cool nights and significant diurnal temperature swings that preserve natural acidity in the grapes. Soils in the region range from clay to limestone with gravel components. Thessaly as a whole holds eight PGI designations, with PGI Karditsa being the relevant classification for Kontozisis. The region is also home to Limniona, a rare indigenous red grape native to this specific area of Thessaly.
