Blauer Wildbacher from Bad Gams vineyard, planted on soil rich in iron and silica. Hand-harvesting, destemming, crushing, and a three-hour skin contact period. The juice is gently pressed and undergoes spontaneous fermentation, then ages for 12 months in previously used 500-liter wooden barrels, mainly oak with some acacia. This wine is between light red and deep rosé. Franz Strohmeier, the winemaker, suggests decanting the wine to fully appreciate its layered complexity. Karmin is unfined, unfiltered, and sulfur is not added during bottling.

Producer profile

Strohmeier

Franz Strohmeier operates as a natural winemaker in Steiermark, part of Styria, Austria, often referred to as the "Green Heart" of Austria. He manages 8 hectares of vineyards, continuously exploring more natural viticulture methods. Notably, he recently began using whey to treat his vines instead of copper sulfate. Some of his vines are left unpruned, yielding intensely flavored, small grapes. Franz does not align with certified biodynamic organizations, yet his practices are reminiscent of biodynamic methods. He opts not to treat vines affected by disease, favoring natural selection to enhance overall vineyard health through increased biodiversity. His portfolio includes unique sparkling wines known for their finesse and the "Trauben, Liebe & Zeit" line—wines made without sulfur, utilizing only grapes, time, and care in their production.

Wine region

Styria

Styria, known as Steiermark, is located in southeastern Austria. It is one of Austria's four main wine regions. Due to its lush landscapes and extensive forests, the area is often referred to as the "Green Heart" of Austria. Styria is divided into three subregions: Südsteiermark, Weststeiermark, and Südoststeiermark.

Südsteiermark is famous for its aromatic white wines, particularly Sauvignon Blanc, which thrives in the region's hilly terrain and cool climate. Weststeiermark is known for the Schilcher, a rosé made from the indigenous Blauer Wildbacher grape. Südoststeiermark, on the other hand, produces a variety of red and white wine styles from a mix of local and international grape varieties.

The climate in Styria is predominantly continental, with Mediterranean influences, providing ideal conditions for viticulture. The soils vary across the region but are primarily composed of volcanic and sedimentary rock, contributing to the distinctive mineral profile found in Styrian wines.

Viticulture in Styria is characterized by small-scale producers with a focus on quality and sustainability. Many vineyards are steep and require hand harvesting, which is prevalent across the region. Styria also has a growing number of winemakers practicing organic and biodynamic viticulture, reflecting a regional commitment to natural wine-making methods.
