turi-nero-davola-agricola-marino-natural-wine
Turi Nero d'Avola 2020

Turi is the Sicilian nickname for Salvatore, and it is the name Salvatore Marino gives to his only red wine: a 90/10 field blend of Nero d'Avola and Pignatello grown on a 2-hectare plot in Contrada Buonivini, near Pachino, in southeastern Sicily. The vineyard sits on clay-limestone soils laden with marine fossils, positioned between the Ionian and Mediterranean seas, within the DOC Eloro Pachino subzone. Vines are bush-trained (alberello) and between 16 and 35 years old.

Marino works entirely by hand, using the lunar calendar to time all vineyard tasks. The only inputs are seasoned organic manure and green manure cover crops. Grapes are hand-harvested, destemmed, and fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks with approximately six days of maceration. Malolactic fermentation occurs naturally, the wine is racked off its gross lees, and it is bottled in the spring following harvest. Total sulfites are very low, and the wine is unfined.

In the glass, Turi Nero d'Avola shows a ruby red color with notes of black cherry, plum, violet, and dried Mediterranean herbs. Tannins are integrated rather than grippy, and acidity keeps the wine fresh despite the warm coastal growing conditions. It is a wine built for the table, not the cellar.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0019/3363/9735/products/salvatore-marino-turi-nero-d_avola-natural-wine-primal-wine.jpg?v=1780186910
