The 2018 vintage is made from old-vine fruit sourced across Mendocino and Sonoma Counties: the Carignan, Zinfandel, and Charbono come primarily from Gary Venturi's vineyard in Calpella, dry-farmed in Yokayo sandy loam soils; nine percent of the Carignan comes from the organic Riccetti vineyard in Redwood Valley; Valdiguie and additional Carignan are sourced from organically farmed Quail Run and Parenti vineyards in Solano County's Green Valley; and the Cabernet Sauvignon is sustainably farmed on Sonoma Mountain at Berger's Oak Shade Ranch, grown in volcanic gravelly loam soils.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe 2018 growing season opened with a wet spring followed by a warm, dry summer with few extreme heat events, resulting in grapes with good structure and natural acidity. The blend is 54% Carignan, 28% Zinfandel, 12% Charbono, 3% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 3% Valdiguie, coming in at 13% ABV.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eEach variety was hand-harvested and fermented separately in open-top fermenters using only native yeasts, with no cold soak and minimal extraction — one light punchdown per day. The wine was aged in neutral 228L Burgundy barrels, used and new 600L demi-muids, and 500L puncheons. Press wine was kept separate and excluded from the final blend. The wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered with no added sulfur.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe label features artwork by Duke Aber and carries on the tradition of John C.
