The Wine: Niellucciu Rose' 2017
Rose’ wine from Corsica, France, made from a direct press of Niellucciu indigenous grapes farmed organically within the Carcu parcel at Nicolas Mariotti Bindi estate, under the label Cantina di Torra. The Niellucciu grapes are fermented spontaneously and aged on the lees in stainless steel for six months before a light filtration before bottling.
The Producer: Nicolas Mariotti Bindi
Nicolas Mariotti Bindi is the mastermind behind Cantina di Torra. A former lawyer who felt that winemaking was best suited to his nature, he has several important experiences under his belt, first in Moulin-à-Vent, Beaujolais, and then Antoine Arena, Muriel Giudicelli, and at Domaine Leccia. Nicolas Mariotti Bindi produced his first vintage in 2007 after getting the chance to farm five hectares of vineyards – an opportunity that came about thanks to local producer Domaine Orenga de Gaffory. Today Nicolas runs a tight ship in within the Patrimonio AOC of Corsica, and he has divided his vineyards into four distinct terroirs:
Mursaglia: about one hectare each of Niellucciu and Vermentinu, planted in 2009 from massale selections. Soils are mostly clay and limestone based.
Porcellese: one of the first vineyards Nicolas Mariotti Bindi bought, about 3.5 hectares of Niellucciu vines planted in 1966 which give very low yields (25 hl/ha). Soils are alluvial with round stones.
Lumiu: this terroir is planted with Vermentinu vineyards facing south. Soils are clay and limestone based.
Carcu: the biggest parcel, around 7.5 hectares of north-facing vineyards planted in 1970, 1996, and 2009 currently being converted to organic farming. Grapes grown within this parcel are used to make Cantina di Torra wine.
