The blend is predominantly Sangiovese, planted at 7,000 vines per hectare and head-trained in the traditional alberello style, supplemented by small interplanted rows of Colorino, Mammolo, Foglia Tonda, and Ciliegiolo. Vineyards sit at 300 to 400 meters elevation on soils of silt and clay studded with broken limestone and rock fragments, facing south.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe 2017 growing season was marked by April frosts, a catastrophic summer heatwave named Lucifer that pushed temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius, and severe drought. Yields were sharply reduced across Tuscany. At Boncie, the combination of high-altitude sites, old-vine root systems, and biodynamic viticulture helped the vines manage the stress. The result is a wine of concentration with a dusty, dried-cherry character and a medicinal edge typical of Sangiovese grown under heat pressure.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWinemaking is minimalist throughout. Grapes are hand-harvested and fermented with indigenous yeasts in open-top oak tanks with skin maceration of approximately 20 days. Aging takes place in used Slavonian oak barrels of varying sizes for 18 to 24 months, followed by at least six months in bottle before release. No filtration.
