glou-glou-pinot-noir-natural-wine
Glou Glou Pinot Noir 2019

Dunites Glou Glou Pinot Noir is a 50/50 blend of Pinot Noir from two distinct SLO Coast sites. Half comes from Bassi Vineyard, located approximately 1.2 to 1.5 miles from the Pacific Ocean near Avila Beach, where marine-origin soils of Briones Tierra complex and Gaviota fine sandy loam over hard sandstone bedrock produce low-yielding, high-energy fruit. This portion was fermented as a light red with one-third whole cluster inclusion and gentle extraction. The other half comes from the 6.5-acre Chene Vineyard in the Edna Valley AVA, four miles from the ocean, farmed biodynamically and Demeter certified from the 2020 vintage onward, with biodynamic practices in use since 2017. That fruit was picked at low Brix and whole-bunch pressed before fermentation in neutral oak barrels, producing essentially a white or very pale wine from red grapes.

Blending these two approaches gives the wine its distinctive character: the Bassi component contributes red fruit, freshness, and a faint tannic grip, while the Chene component adds pale color, bright acidity, and mineral lift. The result sits stylistically between a rosé and a conventional Pinot Noir. Fermentation used native yeasts throughout, and the wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered with minimal sulfur addition.

Winemaker Tyler Eck trained in viticulture and oenology at Lincoln University in New Zealand and worked harvests at Dry River in Martinborough, Stefano Lubiana in Tasmania, and Domaine Francois Villard in the northern Rhône before joining Fess Parker Winery as associate winemaker. Rachel Goffinet Eck holds a viticulture degree from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and oversees vineyard sourcing, working with organically and biodynamically farmed sites on the SLO Coast. Dunites was founded in 2015 and produces approximately 1,100 cases per year across all wines.

The SLO Coast AVA runs along the Pacific-facing slopes of San Luis Obispo County, encompassing communities from San Simeon in the north to Arroyo Grande in the south. The region's west-facing orientation channels persistent marine fog and cool afternoon winds off the Pacific, moderating temperatures and extending the growing season significantly. Soils range from ancient marine sandstone and sandy loam at sites close to the water to clay-rich valley floors further inland. The Edna Valley sub-appellation within SLO Coast sits in a bowl-shaped valley south of the city of San Luis Obispo, collecting cool, moisture-laden air from the ocean.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0019/3363/9735/products/dunites-glou-glou-natural-wine-primal-wine.jpg?v=1630819520
