The Winery: Radovan Šuman

Radovan Šuman was born in Slovenian Styria, in the foothills of the Southern Alps, when it still belonged to Yugoslavia. His father, also a winemaker, fell ill when Radovan was about 14 years old, leaving him in de facto control of the 300-year old winery and its four hectares of vines. Those difficult early years were essential for Rado's self-teaching, having no point of reference other than his own intuition. In his spare time, he dedicated himself to the study of two of Yugoslavia's most popular national pastimes, wrestling and quantum physics. The former, he says, taught him important lessons about his own humanity, and the latter, importantly, led him to the teachings of Rudolf Steiner, the founder of biodynamic agriculture, which Rado has practiced avidly for the last two decades.

Totally isolated in his youth from parallel currents in Western Europe, Šuman didn't think of what he was doing as natural wine, even though he never used additives in his winemaking and never has in the subsequent 30 years. Instead, he relies on extended maceration and long élevage in old oak, chestnut, and cherry foudres to gain stability and age-worthiness. Racking is left to a minimum and wines are seldom topped up. Radovan's approach to viticulture is even more radical. A few years back, he renounced the use of sulfur and copper sprays and stopped plowing entirely. Though his yields are somewhat lower, he believes that his soils have never been healthier and that the energy transferred to the wines, and ultimately to those who consume them, is an unquantifiable good — what fellow Slovenian, Slavoj Žižek, might call a “quantum good.” (source: Josh Eubank)

Shipping & Returns

Stress Free Shipping

At Primal Wine we like to be transparent about everything we do. When it comes to buying products online, shipping is the most important aspect, and that’s why we take great care in shipping and handling your order using only 100% recycled packaging material.

Important Compliance Requirements

UPS and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older.

Important COVID Update

UPS and FedEx declared that in order to protect their workers and customers, they no longer require a signature on delivery. This does not mean they will drop a wine box at your door. UPS delivery workers will make sure the person receiving the wine is 21 years or older, and will ask for his/her name - only then do they deliver the package.

Shipping Rates and Options

An important premise: wine bottles are heavy – about 3 pounds each – and shipping is expensive! Primal Wine is not backed by venture capital money – we proudly are a mom and pop independent online store – and we must charge shipping on all orders, otherwise we wouldn’t be in business. However, we try our best to offer you very competitive shipping rates.

Return Policy

If you are not satisfied with your purchase, please contact us at (424) 414-2040 or via e-mail at hello@primalwine.com between 9 am and 5 pm Pacific Standard Time, Monday through Sunday, we would like to understand and try to solve your concerns.

We may make arrangements for a return and refund if appropriate, and only after we receive unopened products back to our warehouse.
