The Producer: Mas Coutelou
Mas Coutelou is a winery located in Puimisson, a tiny village in the Languedoc-Roussillon region of Southern France, just north of Béziers, led by iconic vigneron Jean-Francois "Jeff" Coutelou. Mas Coutelou has been certified organic since 1987, one of the first in the area, and Jeff is a staunch advocate and practitioner of natural winemaking. Jeff never uses chemicals in the vineyard, where he grows all the typical Languedoc-Roussillon varietals (Grenache, Carignan, Mourvèdre, Syrah) as well as Grenache Gris, Macabeu, Clairette, and Muscat à Petits Grain. In the cellar, Jeff uses indigenous yeast and never adds sulfur at any stage of the winemaking process.
