Il Tufiello

Calling your two wines Sancho Panza and Don Quixote tells you something about the spirit of the place: this is high, lonely, slightly quixotic country, and the wines made here are gloriously out of step with easy commercial taste.

Il Tufiello is the estate of Guido and Igiea Zampaglione in Calitri, in Alta Irpinia, in the province of Avellino. It is a historic cereal farm, organic since 1990 and one of the first in the south to convert. In 2001 the family planted a small parcel of Fiano, and wine bottling began in 2004 with a single hectare. Guido, who also runs Tenuta Grillo in Piedmont's Monferrato, works with his wife Igiea on the vineyard and cellar; his father Michele, a former aeronautical engineer, now tends the vines full time, and sons Pietro and Michele help at harvest.

More on how they farm and work in the cellar in our Il Tufiello producer profile.

Montemattina is 100% Fiano grown in the Contrada Tufiello of Calitri, in Alta Irpinia, at 750 to 800 meters above sea level. The vineyard sits on soils that are part tufaceous and part clayey, both rich in rocky skeleton. At this elevation, the growing season is long and cool for southern Italy, which drives acidity and aromatic precision in the grape.

Grapes are hand-harvested and fermented spontaneously with native yeasts in open vats. Skin maceration runs for 60 days, giving the wine its amber-orange color, textural grip, and phenolic depth. After pressing, the wine ages for 12 months in stainless steel on fine lees, then continues in bottle without filtration. Sulfur additions are minimal, added only at bottling.

The 2015 Montemattina shows a bright golden-orange color with aromas of candied citrus, dried herbs, hay, and an umami, saline quality. On the palate it is dense and medium-bodied with polished tannins, notes of tangerine peel, juicy stone fruit, and a long, vibrant, mineral finish. The wine can prove reductive on opening and benefits from 20 to 30 minutes of air or brief decanting.

Classified as Campania IGT. Born from a ruggedly beautiful and sparsely populated land, Sancho Panza is a natural wine (orange wine) made from 100% Fiano that ferments spontaneously and sees about 60 days of skin contact and extended aging in steel, imbuing it with unparalleled character and brilliance.
